Case Study: Concrete Leveling for a Settled Pool Deck

November 4th, 2026 | 2 min. read

By Sarah Etler

See how an A-1 crew worked through deep voids, material seepage, and tight clearances to level a concrete pool deck.

In this episode of America Lifted, Bert and the A-1 Concrete Leveling Louisville crew returned to a concrete pool deck they had lifted previously. The slabs had settled again, and the team found large voids beneath parts of the concrete.

As pumping began, some leveling material escaped through cracks instead of lifting. The crew adjusted its approach, completed the lift and void filling, then returned the next day to caulk the cracks and patch the access holes.

The Problem: A Settled Pool Deck and Hidden Obstacles

The A-1 Louisville crew had lifted concrete on this pool deck about four years earlier. By the time they returned, sections had settled again.

The team suspected water may have been moving material from beneath the concrete over time, causing erosion and eventual re-settling.  While drilling access holes on this pool deck, the technicians found areas where the drill dropped quickly after passing through the slab, indicating substantial void space below.

Pool decks bring added considerations to concrete leveling. When lifting near pools, crews must avoid damaging the pool liner and take care around plumbing that runs underground between the pool and its pump.

The Solution: Adjusting the Lift to the Conditions

The crew used A-1’s ControlLevel™ concrete leveling process to raise the settled concrete and fill voids beneath it.

ControlLevel gives the crew control over the stone slurry’s thickness as the work progresses, a key advantage when every pool deck responds differently. The crew can use a thicker mixture to build the pressure needed to lift the concrete, then adjust to a thinner mixture that flows beneath the raised slab to fill remaining voids.

By changing the material to match each stage of the repair, the technicians can manage the lift and support the concrete more precisely while working carefully around the pool liner and buried plumbing.

During the initial pumping, material began flowing out through a crack without moving the slab. Rather than continue pumping into the same spot, the crew treated the seepage as a sign to reassess the hole placement, the crack, and the material consistency. They adjusted the material thickness and continued working the lift back and forth, checking how the concrete responded as it moved toward the surrounding deck.

The Results: A Leveled Pool Deck Finished Over Two Days

After completing the leveling and void filling on the first day, the crew returned the next day for finishing work. They caulked the cracks and patched the access holes with grout, adding sand to help blend in these final touches with the surrounding concrete.

The material seepage early in the process called for adjustments, but it also showed why each repair must be managed according to the conditions beneath the slab, and the benefits of A-1’s ControlLevel system.

By monitoring the material’s flow and changing the approach as needed, the crew worked through the deep voids and constrained poolside area to complete the repair.

Learn About Your Concrete Repair Options

Settled pool-deck concrete can create trip hazards and leave empty spaces beneath the slabs that lead to cracks. Concrete leveling can help support and improve the surface without removing the existing concrete.
